Hidden Japan: A closer look at Shimane prefecture

History, nature and more- without the crowds

Stepping off the tourist trail in Japan is a richly rewarding experience. After a recent inspection to Shimane prefecture, EXO is excited to share this under the radar destination with guests looking to escape the classic Golden Route and explore a hidden, authentic corner of Japan.

Located on Honshu Island’s west coast, Shimane is a sparsely populated region filled with beautiful mountain landscapes and well-preserved heritage sites. Despite being less than a 1.5-hour flight from Tokyo, the prefecture receives few tourists.

EXO Travel’s Terin Jackson, Regional Product Development Executive, had an opportunity to explore the region earlier this year.

Among the many highlights were Izumo Taisha Shrine, Adachi Museum of Art, diving into traditional iron forging and enjoying spectacular views from Mt. Sanbe’s three peaks.

A visit to Shimane is an excellent way to feel the traces of ancient Japan that still remain in the modern era

Matsue: Shimane’s capital

Shimane’s capital, Matsue, is an ideal base for exploring the region. It is home to many fascinating sites that provide a glimpse into the past and its deep traditions.

Among the highlights is Matsue Castle. One of Japan’s largest remaining original castles, Matsue Castle is also one of its best preserved. Visitors can explore all of the interior and enjoy sweeping views over the city and the bay. The castle is a must-see highlight that will especially delight history and architecture buffs.

‘A visit to Shimane is an excellent way to feel the traces of ancient Japan that still remain in the modern era’, Terin explains.

Adachi Museum of Art

The Adachi Museum of Art is consistently recognised as the top-ranked garden in Japan. Its landscaped gardens blend contemporary design and are accessible year-round, each season bringing a unique viewing experience.

Inside, the museum features an impressive collection of paintings, ceramics, wood carvings and other art forms from Japanese artists. There is also a rotating series of exhibitions, changing every few months.

Adachi Museum of Art is located 30 kilometres from Matsue. Visitors can take the train from Matsue to Yasugi station (20 minutes) followed by a free, twenty-minute shuttle bus ride to the museum.

Izumo Taisha Shrine and Shimane Museum

Izumo Taisha Shrine, located around 40 kilometres from Matsue, is one of the most important Shinto shrines in Japan. In addition to featuring beautiful architecture and woodwork, the shrine is notable for its huge shimenawa holy rope that hangs above the shrine. Izuma Taisha Shrine is surrounded by quiet forested grounds and a small shopping area that features unique souvenirs, local crafts and regional snacks.

Adjacent to the shrine is Shimane Museum of Ancient Izumo, a must-see for history lovers. The exhibits highlight the ancient culture of Izumo, one of three former provinces of Shimane. Detailed displays of artefacts and replicas showcase Izumo’s distinctive culture, including traditional iron forging, unique burial rituals and more. Although there is limited English signage, the strong visuals ensure visitors grasp the history, heritage and importance of ancient Izumo.

Iron forging traditions

Japan’s rich iron forging history is best explored at Sugaya Tatara Sannai, a traditional forge dating back to the 18th century. The word tatara refers to the method used to create iron and sannai means the village where the iron making takes place. Sugaya Tatara’s original forge is beautifully preserved and, due to its isolated location, has an almost mystical atmosphere

While in Sugaya Tatara region, guests can partake in a blacksmithing workshop. The local master demonstrates how to make a paper knife using traditional tools and techniques, guiding participants to create their own souvenir knife. Although no English is spoken, this workshop is a fun, engaging way to connect with the region’s history.

Other Shimane points of interest

Mt Sanbe: Mt Sanbe offers a range of hiking options and a chairlift leading to a grassy summit. The former volcano last erupted 4000 years ago. As a result, despite only reaching 1,126 metres high, Mt Sanbe’s summit affords sweeping views over the Shimane prefecture. At  the base of the mountain are several well-known public bathhouses, particularly loved by locals in this part of Shimane thanks to the deep muddy colour of the water.

Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine– Located in the town of Oda, this underground silver mine operated from 1526 until 1923. The silver from the mine was used to create currency, used not only within Japan but also as currency for trade with regional and international countries.  Due to its cultural and historical importance, Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine has been listed as a UNESCO Heritage site.

Shimane is a great place to escape the peak season crowds that flock to Japan to see the spring cherry blossoms and autumn leaves.

Planning a visit:

Getting there: Although Shimane has limited train access, it is not difficult to reach. The Izumo Airport, located between Izumo Shrine and Matsue city, is serviced with daily flights from Tokyo, taking just under 90 minutes. Alternatively, a private transfer from Hiroshima to Matsue takes around 2.5 hours.

Getting around: Due to the lack of tourism infrastructure in the remote parts of Shimane, EXO suggests using the provincial capital of Matsue as a base. From there, guests can explore the northeastern parts of Shimane by public transportation or, with a rental car, explore further into the prefecture’s more remote areas.

When to visit:  Shimane is a great place to escape the peak season crowds that flock to Japan to see the spring cherry blossoms and autumn leaves.  Due to its location on the Sea of Japan coast, winter brings moderate to heavy snowfall to Shimane which may restrict accessibility to outdoor attractions like Mt Sanbe.
